Makarasana

Makarasana




Description:

'Makara' is a Sanskrit term which means crocodile. As the human body resembles the posture of a crocodile in this particular asana, so it has been named as the Makarasana. Makarasana is known to increases the body heat and it is also a very relaxing asana just like the Shavasana.



English Name: Crocodile Pose



Procedure:

1. Lie down flat on your stomach with your hands resting on the ground, legs straight and breathe normally.

2. Very slowly spread out your legs in such a manner so that the heels remain inward and the toes outward.

3. Fold your left hand and place it on the right shoulder by bringing it from below the armpit. Do the same thing with your right hand.

4. A triangle will be formed by both the elbows; place your head on the triangle and put your chin just in between the triangle.

5. Retain this posture for 6 seconds and then slowly regain your original position.



Benefits:

1. This asana massages the abdominal muscles.

2. It is a helpful posture for those persons who are suffering from asthma.

3. Makarasana relaxes the whole body and makes it more flexible.



Contradictions:

Persons who are suffering from heart problems, obesity, gastric troubles or even high blood pressure should not practice this asana.
